School Counselor

Mrs. Julie Matheny received her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary and Special Education from Muskingum University and her Master’s degree from the University of Dayton in school counseling. Mrs. Matheny  taught for 16 years before becoming a counselor, which she has also done for 16 years. 29 of her 32 years have been here at Southwest Licking.

Mrs. Matheny is here to support all of the Cool Cats and Kittens at Kirkersville. She sees students individually in her office, in classrooms with monthly lessons, and in small group settings.  She collaborates with staff, meets with parents, and works with the district student and family support coordinator to help meet the needs of all students. 

Students have their own way of letting Mrs. Matheny know they need her help by putting a piece of mail in the mailbox on her door. Teachers, staff and parents can also call or message Mrs. Matheny if they see a student needing support.  Small groups start in the fall and are students that are recommended by staff or parents. Group size is typically 4-6 students (from the same grade level), and groups meet for 6-8 sessions to discuss various topics like: Friendship, Family Changes, Social Skills, and Emotional Regulation.
